*Job Description: Recreation Leader- Youth Programs*

38 per hour* *GENERAL DESCRIPTION:* The Afterschool Program Assistant employed by the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District provides leadership in the form of instruction or supervision of children, ages 6-12, enrolled in our Afterschool Program.
The Afterschool Program Assistant is responsible for helping develop and implement activities that provide social, physical, and creative challenges for elementary school-age participants in a safe, positive, and enriching environment.
*SUPERVISION RECEIVED:* This position comes under the direct supervision of a Youth Programs Coordinator of the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District, Director of Programs, or an individual assigned by the Executive Director to supervise the duties of the Afterschool Program Assistant .
The Afterschool Program Assistant is responsible for following and carrying out all of the workplace expectations and policies of the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District.
*SUPERVISION EXERCISED:* In general, a Afterschool Program Assistant does not supervise other staff members.
However, a Afterschool Program Assistant may be assigned the responsibility of supervising others of the same classification or volunteers assisting in the organization and implementation of a program or activity.
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES:* The essential duties for the Afterschool Program Assistant include but are not limited to: * Lead activities and clubs for preschool and/or elementary school students.
* Supervise participants, grades Pre-K -5th, in a structured after-school or camp setting.
* Work with staff to ensure safe program implementation.
* Maintain sanitization practices and adhere to guidelines for Covid-19.
* Maintain program areas by cleaning up after activities.
* Positively and successfully perform within work team dynamics.
* Maintain attendance records and make required reports.
* Enhance the program or activities via participant solicitation or feedback.
* Make recommendations to the Youth Programs Coordinator regarding program enhancement and any concerns regarding operations.
* Ability to lift 50 pounds.
* Transport program participants from school sites in District mini-bus, as needed.
* Other duties as assigned by the Youth Programs Site Supervisor, Youth Programs Manager, or Executive Director.
*QUALIFICATIONS:* Knowledge of: * Must enjoy working with youth! * Ability to provide courteous and responsible communication with program participants, parents, and the general public.
* Use of tools and supplies used in the application of the programs.
* Working with youth or adults with varying degrees of ability.
* General understanding of child and youth development and proper disciplinary actions.
Ability to: * Read, write and understand English * Work effectively with people.
* Organize and plan activities.
* Have fun and a great attitude to mentor kids.
*Experience & Training:* Must be 16 years of age or older.
Previous experience working with children and/or leading activities of various ages and abilities preferred.
*Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:* Possess current C.
P.
R.
and Firstaid certifications or be able to secure during the first six months of employment.
Training is available at the cost of the District.
*Physical Skills:* While performing the duties of this position, the Afterschool Program Assistant may be frequently required to sit, stand, reach, walk, run, manipulate objects such as tools or controls, and communicate effectively with patrons and fellow staff.
The position may require mobility and the occasional lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Manual dexterity and coordination may be required to operate items such as, but not limited to, are tools, play equipment, program equipment, and standard office equipment.
